What a great success Poem in Your Pocket Day was!! Thank you to everyone who kept their favorite poem in their pocket. I also enjoyed the opportunity to visit Ms. Lewis’ and Mrs. Galvin’s Poetry Cafe yesterday. It was awesome to hear some original poems from students!! Here are some pictures from the cafe:

Book Spine Poetry!

Posted by Laura Losch on May 13, 2010

I got this idea from the Media Specialist of Barrow Elementary School in Clarke County (who is also the Teacher of the Year at his school!) and wanted to share it with you. You take several books and line them up to create a unique poem using just the book titles. Here are two I made:

Call Me Maria,

The Rising Star of Rusty Nail,

Airhead, Happy Kid,

Thirteen,

Trouble, Beauty

Travel Team,

Rules A Corner of the Universe

Kickoff, Bounce,

My Almost Epic Summer

Do you have any favorite books that you could combine together to make a poem?

I’m having an awesome Poem in Your Pocket Day! I saw one 6th grader sharing her pocket poem with her friend in the hall – she received two bags of candy!!  🙂

Poem in Your Pocket Day is coming soon!!!

Posted by Laura Losch on May 11, 2010

That’s right! This Thursday is Poem in your Pocket Day!!! I’ll be handing out poems down by the buses. Then throughout the day, if I ask you if you have a poem in your pocket, and if YOU DO, I will give you a prize!! So gather up your favorite poem and make sure it gets into your pocket on Thursday.

Be on the look out because I can show up anywhere, at anytime. Maybe even the girls’ bathroom (of course not the boys’ bathroom, I’m not that crazy!).

Happy Mother’s Day!

Posted by Laura Losch on May 7, 2010

I know this is two days early, but I won’t see everyone again until Monday, so I want to wish all the mothers out there a wonderful Day! I hope everyone has planned something nice to do for their mother this weekend. Even a simple card would be nice!! Or perhaps you could make her breakfast on Sunday morning!! But whatever you do, I bet your mom would appreciate it!!

And if you’ve forgotten that Mother’s Day is this Sunday, this is your reminder.

Here’s a little history on Mother’s Day:

Happy 5th of May to everyone! Did you know today marks Mexico’s victory over France during the French-Mexican War? For some reason lots of lots of white Americans like to celebrate along with Mexicans on this celebratory day. Hmmm, go figure. . .

Make Waves at your Library!

Posted by Laura Losch on May 4, 2010

What are you doing this summer? Don’t have any ideas yet? Head down to your local library (either Spout Springs or Blackshear, whichever is closest to you) and participate in their Teen Programs this summer. The program runs every Monday throughout the summer. They have some cool things planned like Henna Tattoos and a Wii Game Day. Check their website out for exact details and locations.

Start planning your summer now – we only have two-and-a-half weeks of school left!!!

And please remember – ALL (and that means each and every) books are due next Thursday, May 13th. If I don’t get your books back, you will not be allowed to participate in Yearbook Day or 8th Grade Day. So read up and get those books turned back in to me. Thank you!!
